Portrait of an American Bald Eagle, perched in a black walnut tree searching the landscape below for anything resembling dinner, along the John Day River in central Oregon. This one seems to have lost its fear of human beings and refused to budge even though I walked to within 30 feet of its perch. Bald eagles are notoriously bad fishermen and often steal what other birds of prey have caught.
A native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Buddy Mays, simply put, is a photographer of interesting things. His black and white and color photographs, taken in sixty countries on six continents, have appeared in thousands of publications throughout North America and Europe. He has won numerous national and international photography awards, and several of his images reside in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. He was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography in 1977 for a presentation about American Cowboys, and in 2009 he was selected by Digital Photographer Magazine as one of the best sixty wildlife photographers in the world.
